Bring Back Our Girls campaigners on sit-down protest as police deny access to Aso Rock

The Bring Back Our Girls, BBOG, group, on Tuesday marched to the Aso Villa, lending a voice to the continuous clamor for the release of the abducted Chibok girls. According to a DAILY POST report,  the group, led by Oby Ezekwesili, former Minister of Education and leader of the BBOG, were denied access 'as usual' by a battalion of policemen at the entrance. Security operatives barricaded the entrance, stopping the group from gaining access into Aso Rock. They consequently resorted to sitting on the floor under the scorching sun with their lips sealed.

Brazil Senate votes to remove president Dilma Rousseff

BRASILIA, Brazil -- Senators debated the fate of Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff into the wee hours of Wednesday ahead of a planned vote later in the day on whether to remove Rousseff permanently as leader of Latin America's most populous country. Many of the 81 senators signed up to speak Tuesday afternoon on the fifth day of her impeachment trial and the session finally adjourned around 2:30 a.m. (1:30 a.m. EDT/0530 GMT). Chief Justice Ricardo Lewandowski, presiding over the trial, said it would resume late Wednesday morning for the final vote on removing her. Passionate closing arguments by Rousseff's accusers and speeches by her allies appeared to do little to tip the balance in her favour on the eve of the impeachment decision. Suspended by the Senate in May, Rousseff faces permanent removal for allegedly breaking fiscal responsibility laws in managing the federal budget. Most of the senators making statements attacked Rousseff, blaming her for Brazil falling in

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg goes to Nigeria to witness Africa's tech revolution

Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) (http://www.Facebook.com) CEO Mark Zuckerberg is visiting Nigeria this week on his first trip to Africa, using his time in the country to visit the Yaba technology hub in Lagos, meet with developers and partners, and explore Nollywood. Zuckerberg is in Nigeria to listen and learn and take ideas back to California on how Facebook can better support tech development and entrepreneurship across Africa. One of his first stops on the trip was to visit a 'Summer of Code Camp' at the Co-Creation Hub (CcHub) in Yaba, known as the Silicon Valley of Nigeria. CcHub opened in 2011 and at the time didn't even have an office. Five years later they fill three floors and the roof of a building. At CcHub people can learn how to code, developers can get help launching their first products, and find mentors and funding. At CcHub Zuckerberg met with developers like Temi Giwa, who runs a platform called Life Bank (http://www.LifeBank.ng) that makes blood available

Open letter from Cardinal Anthony Okogie to President Buhari

Cardinal Anthony Okogie . Dear Mr. President : Last year, when you assumed office, the chant of “Change,” your campaign slogan, ushered you into the Presidential Villa.  Today, cries of “hunger” could be heard across the length and breadth of our vast country. Nigerians hunger, not only for food, but also for good leadership, for peace, security, and justice.  This letter is to appeal to you to do something fast, and, if you are already doing something, to redouble your effort. May it not be written on the pages of history that Nigerians die of starvation under your watch.   As President, you are the chief servant of the nation.  I, therefore, urge you to live up to the huge expectation of millions of Nigerians.  A stitch in time saves nine. This is the second year of your administration. You and your party promised to lead the masses to the Promised Land.   It is not an easy task to lead.  But by campaigning for this office, you offered to take the enormous task of leadershi

Buhari`s Sought For Emergency powers Shows lack of trust

In a March 2016 interview on Al Jazeera news channel, Martine Dennis took up President Muhammadu Buhari on the alleged indiscriminate shooting of unarmed pro-Biafran agitators by Nigerian soldiers and invited him to watch a video footage of the killings. Buhari stridently refused to watch and sternly declared that: “Looking for Biafra after two million people were killed, they are joking with the security and Nigeria won't tolerate Biafra”. Shortly afterwards when militancy in the Niger Delta staged a comeback with the emergence of Niger Delta Avengers (NDA), Buhari's response was that “we will crush them”. And when the business community complained about the undue delay in appointing his ministers and the need for the economic and policy direction of the government to be unveiled, the president dismissed their stance as ministers are only noise makers. It took him over six months to eventually make the appointments and he kept true to his perception that they are

Republican presidential candidate; Donald Trump fights breaking out among college Republicans

Michael Straw, a senior at Penn State University, returned to campus this week, put on a crisp blue suit, and walked into a Trump buzzsaw. The president of the school's chapter of College Republicans had a sense of what he was in for. Less than two weeks before, the group had announced in a Facebook post that they would not endorse Donald Trump after holding an online vote — a move that sparked outrage, including a call from the chairman of the Pennsylvania Federation of College So when Straw gaveled in the chapter's first meeting of the school year on Monday, it wasn't altogether surprising that he was confronted by angry college Trump supporters — some wearing the signature “Make America Great Again” hats — demanding a re-vote of the non-endorsement and chanting Trump's name throughout the meeting. Straw ultimately made it through the hostile meeting without budging on the endorsement, or his own tenure as president of the group. And he says the tensions that

Naming Animals After Human Beings; Does It Amount To Criminal Conduct? A Case Study Of Joachin Fortemose Chinakwe

On Saturday, August 13, 2016 one Joachin Fortemose Chinakwe, aka Joe was arrested by the Sango-Ota Police Division following a complaint by one Halilu Umar. Joachin is accused of naming his dog Buhari and inscribing the name on both sides of the dog, a name which coincided  with Umar's father's name, Alhaji Buhari. This incident is one of a kind; it is a rare incident and perhaps the first time such matter would come up for investigation by the Police. It indeed has generated a lot comments from commentators and lawyers. There is a sharp division of views, while one section thinks the conduct is criminal, another section thinks it is not criminal. The function of naming of creatures dates back to creation. From the account in Genesis 2:19, God took every living creature HE has formed to Adam to see what he could call it, and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof. The origin of names  therefore dates back to antiquity. However, the quest

How JJC, Funke Akindele got married in London

Italy earthquake: Rescuers race to find survivors

Italian rescuers worked for the second day in a row to pull survivors from the rubble as death toll hits 250 people. The death toll from a devastating earthquake that hit and flattened central Italian towns climbed to at least 250 on Thursday and could rise further as rescuers worked for a second day to find survivors under the rubble of flattened towns.  Wednesday's pre-dawn earthquake razed homes and buckled roads in a cluster of mountain communities 140km east of Italy's capital, Rome. It was powerful enough to be felt in Bologna to the north and Naples to the south, each more than 200km from the epicentre. The US Geological Survey said that it was a 6.2 magnitude quake that hit near the town of Norcia, in the region of Umbria. An army of emergency workers using sniffer dogs clambered over piles of debris trying to find anyone still buried beneath, while cranes removed huge slabs of fallen masonry and trucks full of rubble left the area every few minutes. On Thur

Baby simulation dolls may boost teen pregnancy: study

It’s a popular teen pregnancy prevention tool used in high schools in at least 89 countries: send students home with a crying, pooping, burping doll to teach them first-hand lessons of early parenthood. But a surprising new Australian study has found that infant simulation dolls may actually increase the likelihood of pregnancy among teenage girls, not lessen it. The research, published Wednesday in The Lancet, studied more than 1,000 teenage girls who went through Australia’s Virtual Infant Parenting (VIP) program, which is adapted from the U.S. program Reality Works – sometimes called the “baby think it over” program. The VIP program is an opt-in curriculum that touches on issues like smoking, drinking and drugs and includes an infant simulator that students take home for a weekend. The doll cries when it becomes “hungry” and requires students to rock it to sleep, change it and burp it. A small computer inside the doll also measures any mishandling, crying time and overall
